Thailand

A quick update-
We landed here a few days ago. Went straight from the airport down to a beach town about an hour and half south of Bangkok. We were met at the airport by an old friend, Sheldon, who helped us with our initial navigation of this new culture. It was really great since I was experiencing my first bout of tummy troubles. Nice to see a familiar face, be met with a car and not have to figure out public transport. He also helped me with some tea and medicine for my bad gut. My GI problems passed quickly and we were able to spend the next few days resting, getting used to the Thai culture, food, exchange rate (it takes a while to wrap your head around a new currency.) We were also able to do some business stuff as far as managing some matters at home, get a mobile phone and charge it with minutes and decide where to move on to... He was a great help with all of this.
We came back to Bangkok yesterday morning. The day before I  had received a Facebook message from a friend who suggested that I look up a woman that lives here that used to work at Marquette General- Donna Boyd, a retired anesthesiologist. Donna and I passed in the corridors of MGH but didn't know each other at all. I did contact her and she kindly invited us to stay in her beautiful home in the countryside outside of Bangkok for a few of days. She has a sweet golden retriever, a kitty and a couple of birds that we are enjoying. She has been coming here for over 20 years and has lived here permanently for the last year and a half. Her Thai is excellent and she is a wealth of knowledge about Thai culture, food, customs. She also has a lovely Thai family here (by marriage.) She lives in a college town outside of Bangkok that is about the size of Marquette. The only white woman here so we are off the tourist track which is awesome. She also is very knowledgeable about Bangkok- sights to see and hotspots to avoid. Today we'll tour around here a bit then check out the city for a few days before heading north to some tourist sights on the way to Chiang Mai. We are really enjoying the countryside and Donna has been an amazing hostess. So glad we made this connection. We'll post photos soon...

  1. Hi Aunt Becky and Uncle Mike!
I hope you are enjoying Thailand. There was a nasty cold snap here in Michigan, but last week it was perfect skiing conditions. Grandma, Uncle Larry, and the kitty are doing great. Just when we thought winter was about to end, we got some more snow blown in by very high winds. It's freezing out, and we've had even more snow days. (Though I can't complain about that) We miss you, and hope you enjoy yourselves!
    Love from,

  2. Hi Lia!
Glad you have gotten some skiing in. I hope you don't have to stay extra days at the end of the school year because of all of the time off.
It's really warm here. Almost 90 degrees right now and it is only going to got hotter from now until we get home. We're trying to adjust but we enjoy the air conditioning at the end of the day.
    Miss you too! xoxo
